Lady GaGa - The Fame: Monster (2009)

Special for this entry, to show my Love, Love, Love for GaGa, I'm doing this review "live" as I am listening to all the tracks the first/second time(s).

"Bad Romance" is the current single, and it is tearing up the radio like a wild fire. The Video is also getting MILLIONS of views and everyone is at a resounding lust for this song. "Bad Romance" is probably her strongest single since "PokerFace". The song is catchy pop, mixed with a dark edge; the perfect intro to Monster. Although I have heard the demo of the song, and the radio edit, this is the first time I have heard the the album version, and it is like a hybrid mix of the two; totally fabulous in every way.

"Alejandro" is probably my favourite track on the album. it was the first one to leak from the album (aside from "Bad Romance"), and even though it was only the demo, I was in lust with this song. The album version is 10x better. It got more of an intro, and more polishing all around. I thought the demo was perfect as it was, but this just proves that Lady GaGa and her team of producers are not to be messed with or underestimated. "Alejandro" has a very strong Ace of Base vibe to it, but definitely updated with GaGa's flavour.

"Monster" is rumoured to be the 3rd single, and would makes sense to do so as it is a club banger for sure. When I hear it it, it makes me think horror movie at a high school dance, but the movie was made to look like the 80's, but made in the 2000's. And the Chorus/hook of this song is gonna snag everyone who hears it and make them wanna dance.

"Speechless" is the only "ballad" on this album, and is another rumoured single (4th). and has been stated by GaGa that it is her favourite song of the album, not to mention (in her opinion) the strongest song she has written to date. I don't disagree. Gaga is not known for her singing abilities, but for her crazy hooks and ridiculous outfits during public appearances (which I also love). This song will change anyone's mind who has doubted her talent. It is also much better than the ballad on her last album "Brown Eyes", which was good, but very awkward to listen to frequently.

"Dance In The Dark" is synth-pop and over the top. It was released along with "Alejandro" as a promotional single for the album last week and was received very well by fans, critics, and everyone else alike. It fits very well on Monster as it has a dark feel to it, especially when listing the names of the dead celebrities who (I assume) have made an impact on her creatively, but is not a downer. It is definitely a contender to be released as a proper single.

"Telephone" is the second collaboration that GaGa has done with Beyoncé, but unlike the "Video Phone (Extended Mix)", GaGa and B's voices sound more blended and less forced. the song starts slow-ish and then starts into a hot beat and hypnotic lyrics. The song was confirmed recently as the next single, which goes well with "Video Phone" being Beyoncé's latest single. "Telephone" will chart higher than "Video Phone", but videos from both are highly anticipated.

"So Happy I Could Die", down tempo thogh it may be, it's still very dance-able and fantastic. I'm not falling instantly in live with it, but give it 'til the Play Count of 3 and it will be much loved. I don't have much to say about it, other than that it is the weakest song on the album/EP.

"Teeth" is the strangest song on the album, but in the BEST FUCKING WAY POSSIBLE! Think the heat/sex factor of Britney's "Breathe On Me" mixed with music from "The Jungle Book" or "Tarzan" (like I said, strange, but fucking HOT). It is a totally fun song to sing and grind to. Show Me Your Teeth!

Summing up, The Fame: Monster is the best "Album" of 2009. although it is technically a EP for a re-release of 2008's The Fame, it is being released as a standalone album for those who already own The Fame, or as a Deluxe Edition with Monster as Disc 1 and the Fame as Disc 2. There is also a Limited Edition box which contains a bunch of GaGa goodies, including a lock of her hair (ick...) all at a steep price tag of $100. The las edition will be individually numbered, so they are a real collector's item and is only meant for the hardcore fans who have the wallet to support their fandom.

This Title Is Just Way To Fitting...

Britney Spears - 3 (2009 - Single)

So here is the newest single from the original "Madonna 2.0" (which I think we can all agree, Lady GaGa is on her way to taking over), and is another catchy/dancey hook-fest.

3 is produced by the same people who brought us "Stronger", "...Baby One More Time", and "If U Seek Amy" and sounds like something that should have been on B's third studio album; Britney, but also sounds A LOT like Fergie's "Fergalicious". This is Britney's third single to come out around early fall, three years in a row, and is her third single of 2009.

I also expect this to be her third #1 lead single off an album in a row ( Following 2007's "Gimme More" and 08's "Womanizer"). The song is like a 3 min hook, but has a lot more listening value than "Radar".

3 is the lead single from The Singles Collection (out November), which is basically a re-issue of 2004's My Prerogative, dropping the lesser singles from her 6 studio albums and including the recent singles (excluding "Break the Ice" for some mind-boggling reason), but i will more than likely review that when it comes out. As for this single, it's nothing too great/original/memorable, but will do well for the time being and is worth a listen.

The Bravery - Slow Poison (2009 - Single)

So if you are completely in the dark, The Bravery have been around since '03-'04, or that's when they first broke into the mainstream with their single "An Honest Mistake" from their self-titled album. They got big around the same time The Killers did, and they both had very similar music styles so they were compared early on. The Killers got more mainstream success, but I've always found The Bravery to have more substance to their music, making it worth listening to. Besides...Brandon Flowers (Killers) is alternative music's answer to Kanye West...and nobody wants that...

Slow Poison is the lead single for the band's upcoming third album, and though I wouldn't exactly call the song "single-worthy", it is a solid track that stays loyal to their trademark style. It reflects more on the side of the songs from their second album The Sun And the Moon (and the re-issue The Sun And The Moon: Complete); being more down tempo than their songs from their first album The Bravery, but shows elements that were absent from The Sun And The Moon. While not going backwards, they seem to be headed to a new sound that is a blend of both of their past albums, a lil more alt-rock, but with that electro/punk undertone. Interesting music to say the least.

Slow Poison will take a while to grow on you, but it is definitely worth a listen, and it has gotten me excited for their album (Stir The Blood, due out November 10th). Personally I would hope they take back up the electronic element to their music (or some of the Disco pop element used in Shakira's "She Wolf", which they helped write/produce), but they have yet to seriously disappoint me, so I eagerly await to see what they've been working on.

Karl Wolf - Carerra (2009 - Single)

long time no post, but I was waiting for something i felt the need to write about, and loooky looky, it has come forth!

Karl Wolf is a Canadian, not that we are especially proud of him, who has been on the music scene for a couple of years. Wolf even won a Juno award..or was nominated for one...I think... but even Canadians knows how much of a joke award the Juno is... not exactly something you ever brag about having...similar to winning Canadian Idol (which got cancelled I might add)

Wolf's music is in the same kind of hip-pop genre as Shawn Desman, and Massari and Danny Fernandes. All of those examples previously mentioned are fellow Canuks, unfortunately Canada breeds this music..it exists else where I'm sure, but I'm just going on what I know. While not especially awful, (like Massari), and not as awkward to listen to (Shawn Desman), it's not overly great or special in it's own right. His career is basically "I can sing half decently, but I have a hot body so you will all love me"... and this is why I hate tweenage girls at times...because they have the mental path of "guy = hot, music =good?, MUST GO BUY!"...and presto, he is relevant.

this loverly number, "Carerra", is about a car...as if Karl Wolf's music wasn't boring enough, he chooses to sing songs about hip-hop stereo types, (which must make shooting the videos super easy). the lyrics are also singing about a woman at the same time..so they don't make a whole bunch of sense, but then again as B44 knows (also Canadian...sensing a pattern yet?) that teenage (usually female) music listeners will sing things and not think about it until someone points this out to them.

I am kind of ragging on the guy, and not all of it is deserved. This song is 10 levels of awful, but his previous single, and other tracks on his album Bite The Bullet are not such travesties, especially his "cover" of Toto's "Africa" (I use the term cover loosely, as the songs really only share a hook, chorus and basic melody).

I would also like to add that there are good Canadian singers, but they do not run on the "Much Music" circut... at least not successfully.

so this won't exactly be a review as I am in love/lust with Lady Gaga, more devoted praise. ♥

I will say the title sucks however, it sounds like a cheap bootleg, but I assure you it is all authentic and all fucking hot mixes of The Fame, Love Game, Paparazzi, Just Dance and Poker Face. I really like all the mixes on the EP, but I could have done with either more mixes, or at least have all the singles (it's missing Eh, Eh [Nothing Else I Can Say] and technically Beautiful, Dirty, Rich) just because they included 2 tracks twice (though the mixes ARE very different).

It was just released today in Canada, will be worldwide next week (I believe).

Katy Perry - One Of The Boys (2008/9)

Katy Perry has been in and around the music scene for years before having mainstream success. Before recording her own album, she penned tracks for other artist as well as doing vocals for the demos, including Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, etc.

Katy Perry, not unlike Lady Gaga, knows how to write a pop song; where they differ (aside from obvious sub-genre variations) is that Katy's songs are written as pop songs for an album, Gaga's are all songs that could be released as singles, which is why the later is seeing more populatity.

I only reason I compare the two, is because they seem to both be playing to the same crowd of people, and became popular roughly about the same time. Katy's album is not one that has the same replay value, nor is it as catchy, but will give her a more permanent fan base. All the songs on the album are very listenable and will agree with most crowds.

There are two definite styles of songs on the album; 1) the smart witted, pop-pop songs and 2) the down-tempo slow songs. and the album falls pretty much down the middle between the two. Out of Perry's 5 singles (4 not including Ur So Gay), Have all (but one) been in the first category, and the next rumoured single is either "Finger Prints" and "If You Can Afford Me" are the last two, so you can tell which of the two varieties Katy and her label expect will make more money.

Unfortunately it's kind of "false advertisement" when people purchase the cd, as the singles are only half the album, and the other (unreleased half isn't nearly as much fun, but very good none the less. I think that the average listener will find that album to be disappointing as it is not like the singles, which is usually a good indicator as to what an album has for a sound.

The Australian Tour Edition of One Of The Boys comes with a bonus disc that has remixes of all the singles (except Thinking of You, which gets a pretty acoustic version instead), and covers of songs from MGMT and Sam Sparrow. All of the tracks on this are excellent, and I have nothing bad to say about it at all, it is a solid companion to the album and any music fan will appreciate the content.

Overall, not a bad debut album, I hope Katy Perry keeps up the energy and quirky lyrics for future albums. Some of the slower songs on One of the Boys are hard to sit through, but are still of better quality than most other artist's filler tracks.

To Fall Down...Does that not Imply You Were Somewhere To Start?

Selena Gomez and the Scene - Falling Down (2009 - Single)

Okay another Disney protogé (only this one is still employed by them). Selena Gomez has made her way around the Disney scene, as a guest star in the Suite Life and in Hannah Montana, and stars in Wizards of Waverly Place... but of course because she can act she MUST be able to sing... right?

Well auto-tune thinks she can..now. the song is so cliché-d it's not even marginally amusing. the entire track is just noise, if I were to compare it to anything it'd be The Pussycat Dolls' "Flirt" (B-Side to their PCD album), but gone HORRIBLY WRONG! She whines through the entire song about some guy who thinks he is top shit, and then how he will eventually "fall down"... but really. there is no point where I care about what she is saying.

This song is a waste of perfectly good sound waves, like unlike the previous singles I reviewed (Heidi Montag's and Adrienne Bailon's) I may actually delete this song from my library, it's that bad. Disney; when auto-tuning someone, at least make them sound good, this is just a pathetic effort.

Flyleaf - Again (Single - 2009)

this will be a very short review be cause I have no quarrels with this song.

Again is the lead single of the band's sophomore album Memento Mori set to drop at the end of October. Again is a great rock song. (Once I know the lyrics) you can sing to it, you can jump around to it, and sounds great blared at unnecessarily loud volumes. It has a new sound to it, but it's not too far away from their previous releases that fans will get agitated and revolt. I'd almost say it sounds TOO much like old Flyleaf, but i wouldn't have it any other way. I'm very pleased.

former Disney + Def Jam = Superbad?

Super Bad - Adrienne Bailon (Single? - 2009)

So Ladies and Gentlemen! As you can see from the little math equation title, another Disney alumni is trying to launch an adult sin(g)ing career by "releasing" (freshly leaked) a song that is miles away from previous work, and thus makes them all grown up and worthy of respect... if only it worked that nicely

Super Bad is your run-of-the-mill radio song, is sounds very much like Eva Simmons' "Silly Boy" and also has heavy influence from "Let It Rock"- Kevin Rudolf + 'Lil Wayne's hit of last summer. So now not only is this song 2 seconds from playgarisim, it doesn't improve anything, lyrics aren't better, the hook is less catchy, and this song ls 10 levels of forgettable.

that being said, it is catchy as shit, but I already see this song having a short play life in my Library, and I will be done with it in 3 weeks, if it makes it that long. It'll all depend how embedded in my head it gets after writing in this review ( as anything I review is put on repeat until I'm done).

So like many Disney stars before her, Adrienne Bailon (former member of The Cheetah Girls), is giving us average music, ripping off the songs that have already charted and people have moved on from. Hopefully the rest of her album that is to drop late this year or spring '10 isn't as 'blah' as this song.

No Heidi, I Don't Wanna Hear What Your Body Has To Say

Heidi Montag - Body Language (Single 2009)

Mrs.Heidi Montag's Body Language, wich is the "first official" single off her debut album; which has had like 8 names and I will only bother to remember it when the album is released as at least by that point it will be difficult for them to try and change it,... but really it's not only the 5th single off the album, but technically it is a re-release of the 2nd or 3rd single. This album is a mess and a half and it's still in production.

Of Heidi's recording session tracks (ALL of which have leaked), there is like 4 songs that are worth listening to, and this WAS one of them. I put emphasis on 'was' because "Body Language" like many songs before it have fallen to over production and unnecessary guest vocals by someone who has no business being a rapper.
Body Language's demo is a fun pop track, but when they were 'polishing' it in the studio, it lost something so it is a lot less fun, and seems like it tries WAYY to hard. but I have a feeling the over-compensation is just her trying to get her music career anywhere and will carry into all her music. Oh, and the next thing that kills this single is hubby Spencer Pratt's lovely rap contribution to it... like I said above UNNECESSARY GUEST VOCALS BY SOMEONE WHO HAS NO BUSINESS BEING A RAPPER!

so the single is a mess, just like the rest of the album will be. This single's demo (which I thought was the final version) would have done well, but this new version will not only flop, but will become great fodder for Video On Trial if a video is ever made, or released (what ever happened to the video for "Look How I'm Doing" anyways?).

Cascada - Evacuate the Dancefloor (2009)

Allll riighty! time for review #2, this oen will be more reasonable in length as I'm not doing an entire recording session, just an 11 track album. speaking of which;

As per usual Cascada albums, very dancy, and all kinda similar in sound, but I will say, this album actually makes an effort to differentiate the tracks from one another, so props for the effort put forth!

"Evacuate the Dancefloor", the first single and title track is the best way to start this album, it is a hot dance track with a killer hook and a generally feel-good song. I don't think there is anything you can really hate about it, unless you are a Cascada purist and aren't open to a new style, that only really appears on this track and another.

then tracks "Everytime I Hear Your Name", and "Ready or Not" are a welcomed return to their previous sound, which will make fans of the previous two albums very happy. All three are fun, not overly special, but not terrible.

"Hold your Hands Up", "What About Me", and "Hold On" are on the hand are hella-lame. they offer nothing and are really clear filler songs to make a full album over an EP, which may have been better.

"Fever", "Breathless", "Why You Had To Leave", and "Dangerous" are the songs on the album that make me happy because they show Cascada is capable of something else. Don't get me wrong, they are still dance songs, but they all have a very different sound that was missing from previous albums Every Time We Touch and Perfect Day. "Breathless" does have a very Katy Perry "Waking Up In Vegas" sound to it, just as "Why You Had To Leave" has a faint trace of Mel C's "I Turn To You", but still have their own spin to them so they are original, but familiar sounding, in a good way.

The final track "Draw the LINE (Yanou's Candlelight Mix)" is a beautiful ballad, which is how Cascada usually ends their albums. It shows lead singer Natalie's true vocal talent, which doesn't always come across with the heavy dance beats. An excellent way to end the album.

Overall, the album is fairly solid. it won't be remembered in 10 years, but it is enjoyable and fans of the genre and of Cascada themselves will be pleased. The individual tracks on this one are fairly decent, but the album is better to listen to as a whole.

Doll Domination? I So think not! (2.0... or is it 3.0?)

okay so on to the actual album tracks. By my count, there are 32 songs in the Doll Domination recording sessions, not including single variants, like the video edit of "When I Grow Up" and "Bottle Pop", or the tour version of "I Hate This Part" unless there is a significant change like the case with "Hush, Hush" and "Hush, Hush; Hush, Hush" (great title, eh?). This does include 2 songs that were leaked, and one that was featured on the Confessions of a Shopaholic Soundtrack.

these are the tracks:

When I Grow Up - first single, standard PCD song, pretty solid dance track
Bottle Pop (featuring Snoop Dog) - 4th single, the video version cuts out Snoop's raps (for the better), On of my favourite tracks on the disc,
Whatcha Think About that? (featuring Missy Elliot) - 2nd single, general man hating woman anthem, really fun to sing. haha
I Hate This Part - 3rd single, very well recieved by the public, which perplexes me to NO END, Dave Audé Hybrid mix (Aka, tour edit) is MUCH better.
Takin' Over The World - kinda boring, should have been swapped on the original release for "Top of the World" as the songs are similar.
Out Of This Club (featuring R. Kelly) - BAD BAD BAD song, not the wors on the album be pretty fucking close.
Who's Gonna Love You? - another contender for worst album track, clearly falls into the "album filler" category
Happily Never After - Great song, but not very PCD, as it shouldn't be as Nicole wrote it for her solo album which got scrapped.
Magic - Timberland produced, one of the best songs on all the Doll Domination releases, and the highlight of their tour's set list.
Halo - very R&B song, I like it , but most people would find it very passable
In Person - The "Right Now" of this album, interesting vocals in comparison to the rest of the album, but awkward to listen to regularly.
Elevator - Another son that i like, but most would find passable, another song I really liked on their tour.
Hush, Hush - best written song on the album lyrically, was my favourite until the "improved" "Hush, Hush; Hush, Hush" came out, now I can't stand the song in any form.
Love The Way You Love Me - another song that should have been dropped from the release, as it isn't special and kinda drags the album down further into mediocrady.
Whatchamacallit - HOT dance track, a call out to y'all sheep who don't have your own styles. LOVE this song!
I'm Done - DING! we have a winner. the WORST track on Doll Domination, in fact I've listened to it a total of 8 times, in comparison to the rest of the tracks which are averaging a play count of about 30+)
Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps - international bonus track, kinda boring, but it was a bonus international track so i can't be to hard on it.
Lights, Camera, Action (featuring new Kids on The Block) - another international bonus track, nothing too special, but listen-able. if only marginally
Baby Love (featuring Will.i.am) - Stupid Stupid song from Nicole's solo sessions, slightly remixed. glad it was only one obscure international deluxe editions...
Hush, Hush; Hush, Hush - UGH! I liked this song as a ballad, and I liked it on the tour, but the fact of them going back to record this monstrosity, and then have the audacity to release it as a single is stupid, even for Robin Anton, the single is doing well, I just hate the fact that they ruined a perfectly good slow song (that I might add charted in Russia with no promotion). Samples "I Will Survive"
Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)(featuring A R Rahman nad Nicole Scherzinger) - 5th Single, was released right after Slumdog and the original version of this song won the a few Academy Awards, nice, light pop, but is very forgettable. I also resent this song as it was the cause of all the re-releases
Top Of The World - Recorded as the title theme for some MTV show (The City, I think it's called), solid track, almost single worthy
Painted Windows - the song sounds very much like is should be sung by Miley Cyrus, but this song is below standards for both her and PCD, very boring, but has an interesting beat, just not interesting enough to bother listening to it.
The Jungle - the first of two leaked tracks that are just BAD songs. like the would be the worst tracks, but I can't exactly rip the songs apart as they may be demos, and they were smart enough to not release them, so that is the only fact that saves them.
Pay 2 Play - the second leaked track, I hope to GOD that is was a joke, because this is just bad.
Bad Girl - another boring PCD song, I'm sure it fit nicely into the movie, but it's not really necessary to listen to more than that.

And the solo songs on the deluxe version:
If I Was A Man- Jessica Sutta - The BEST of the solo songs, even live. Why she isn't allowed to sing regularly is far beyond me.
Space - Melody Thornton - kinda boring, but only because Melody is better than this and is capable of much more
Don't Wanna Fall In Love - Kimberly Wyatt - very 80's, though I very much doubt that she is singing, as it wounds very altered, and she lip-syncs the song when done live.
Played - Ashley Roberts - cute song, she could have probably done better, but the song is playable
Until U Love Me- Nicole Scherzinger - woo Nicole...because we've never heard you sing before..woo...boring, boring, and more boring...which is fair, she sang all the other boring songs too

so out of these songs, all are decent to listen to, some are awful and are really good. if I were to make the album down, it would have been:

but for the actual album, i would rate as follows:
Doll Domination (standard) - 5/10 - even amounts of good/average and boring/average
Doll Domination (deluxe) - 6/10 - Solo songs boost up the original
Doll Domination (2009 Re-issue) - 6.5/10 - More songs added, some good some bad
Doll Domination 2.0 - 6/10 - cut out some bad and some solid tracks so nothing changed really
Doll Domination: The Mini Collection - 7/10 - condensed EP that is very good for replay value
Doll Domination 3.0 - 6.5/10 - WAY TOO MANY tracks, it'd be a very LONG album to get through.

sorry for the long post(s) about this album, future posts won't be this long ( I hope), this is just a year long grudge and a review for basically 6 albums.

EDIT: 3.0 has only one more track than the 2009 Re-issue, but the rating still stands, as both albums have too many tracks anyways and the bonus tracks make it better than most of the other releases.

Doll Domination - The Pussycat Dolls (2008-2009... and probably for many years to come)

Okay so this album is what got me off my ass to start blogging and doing reviews for Music...no that is not a compliment.

So the album isn't that bad, but the general public would never know that with the amount of times it's been re-released in the past year. When it was first released, there was the original version and the deluxe version which featured a bonus disc with solo songs by each of the dolls for the fans who were sick of Nicole (all of us) singing everything, with her back-up dancers. both of these editions had international variant bonus tracks that altered depending on the country.

Thats where all went down hill, since then they have re-released the album about 4 other times. First they re-released the album with new singles, most notably, their cover of the Oscar winning Jai Ho! from the many award winning, Slumdog Millionaire (good movie :p). then they proceeded with an EP called the "Mini Collection" which was all the new tracks, presumably for all the people who bought the initial releases, or were only interested in the singles, which is what the EP consisted of. Then Doll Domination 2.0 (Pictured above)) was released, which was a hack job cut + paste of the album, trying to cut out some of the dead weight filler and have a better album overall. this hasn't seemed to work as 2.0 was only really released in Australia, and got scrapped everywhere else. Finally and most recently they released 3.0 which is a combination of the original release and ALL the bonus tracks from the different editions (count 6 now).

combined this album has sold under half a million, but I'm not surprised, people are skeptical to buy things because they get rereleased in like 4 months anyways... and i wonder why they think that...

I was gonna continue onto the music, but this is too long a post, so I will post the second bit in a separate post. haha

I don't know how often I will both to use this, but I always thought it would be kinda fun to do some blogging. not because I'm particularly interesting, but because you can only twitter so many things... haha.

That and I always wanted to do kind of reviews for movies and music, maybe post samples and such for people to hear. I dunno.

I also wanted to say a quick Fuck You to people who don't delete their old blogs, because it made it difficult to pick a name that I liked as most of them were taken. Yes I am talking to the folks who took GenerationNeXt and Generation-NeXt. blogs are already hard to find because all the hosing websites are similar without having to remember how many hyphens are needed for the ones you are looking for, so again, fuck you, and I hope you enjoy your new blog, which you will also abandon and piss off someone else in the future.

Oh! and just so anyone wants to know, the Blog is named after a lyric in the song Move Over by the Spice Girls, as it is my favourite song by them, and I think it has a certain ring to it. and my Username is a combination of Evanescence (Ev) and My Chemical Romance (Chemical), which also seemed to have a nice ring to it, it usually isnt already taken, and they were my fave bands at the time, Ev still is my favourite, but that's besides the point. ha

Okay I've rambled enough, not to mention I'm not really gonna "share" my blog until I have a couple of posts, jsut so people can kinda see in what direction that it's going. not to mention that this post is so long people will have gotten bored before this point anyways. my Twitter link is here
